Orcas Island Waterfall
I utilized the PS "Underwater" filter as utilized by the Blue Heron. I had not used this before. I like the effect. I did dial it back a bit from the standard pre-set value.

Desert Trip
That f/1 glow
I've always enjoyed taking photographs "wide open," believing that not only does doing so set off the subject as expected, but also it can create backgrounds that are almost as interesting as the subject itself. The Leica Noctilux f/1 lens provides these attributes in an almost gratuitous fashion. Here is an image I captured last week as my daughter was waiting for an Amtrak train at the Oceanside station. The train was slowly rolling as she observed its arrival, and f/1 created textures and patterns in the the background that draw the eye to the subject. Fun stuff!

Should be a lot of great shots to be captured, both people and equine, all in our own unique way. Let's go have some fun, take some pictures and maybe drink a beer or two.

El Malpais National Monument
A postcard from New Mexico. Every trip to the southwest, I try to get off the main road at least once. I feel spiritually replenished and sometimes magic happens. This trip I decided to try a road I had never taken from Quemado out to the ranger station and onward to the Sandstone Bluffs. Never made it to the La Ventana natural arch.
The road was the worst washboard I had ever driven on. Sign said, road impassible when wet, well guess what, it was impossible dry. Felt like I was going to get thrown off. And a van full of fragile items including expensive pottery. I made it to the bluffs, not too spectacular. Depression family homesteaded it in the 30's, might have been named Garrett. Still felt great to find nowhere again.
I passed this pond and took a shot.

Illustrated Bodies - Tattoo Show - Albuquerque
There is a large tattoo show going on this weekend at my hotel in Albuquerque. I had a nice chat with the promoter and he invited me in to take pictures for the blog. People couldn't have been nicer and never made fun of my lack of surface adornment. I felt a bit like an alien anthropologist studying a very different planet. The fellow above suggested I get a tattoo of a camera, but I demurred as gracefully as I could, citing a long standing tribal prohibition.

George H. W. Bush - 1972
I took this picture of George H. W. Bush in April, 1972 when he visited Lawrence, Kansas. He was ambassador to the United Nations at that time. It was before he was the Director of the CIA, Chairman of the Republican Party and President of the United States.
I was working as a photographer for the Lawrence Journal World. A reporter and I accompanied him for three days as he visited all the local notables and gave a major US policy address at Kansas University.
We loaned him the negative of this image which he used as his official publicity photo for several years. In return, he autographed an original print for me.
