I want to thank all of you who participated in the Monochrome Exhibition at Pinnell Gallery, our second annual show. It was an excellent show that really displayed all of your considerable talents.
Next year we will be back to color but are currently in search of a theme. If you have any thoughts as to a particular show that would exceed our prior production I anxiously await your input. Please keep shooting.

I have been thinking of broad themes, like "Live" or "Vibrant" that would allow individual flexibility but still have something of a central focus.

ReplyDeleteWow, I didn't even perceive the greens until I read about them. I really like low saturation color and this is a good example.
ReplyDeleteOn the show I think we are at a sort of crossroads where we press for constant improvement or just settle into a pattern. I think we have a strong group with real potential to out do ourselves next year. I am working my brain to dream up themes that would be asthetically challenging but open to diverse approaches such as alternative processes or other innovations like, who knows three dimensional?
While I don't yet have a theme in mind, I would love to see a few out-size images displayed. Along the lines of the size you would see in a museum. Maybe 2 or 3 on each wall. Admittedly, they would be expensive to print, but the impression on patrons would be that of serious pnotography.

ReplyDeleteNot a bad idea, Michael. You could call it "Think Big." There is a man in town with an oversized Canon printer that could do the trick.
ReplyDeleteI will go along with this if it is what y'all decide to do. I personally like the smaller photograph. I often work in 8x10 sizes and with a 16 Mb digital camera I can make an 11x14 at 360 dpi. These days that is the best marriage between optical quality and size that I can figure out. Still, I ain't rigid and if I can get access to a jumbo printer I am sure 16MP will make a nice large image.
ReplyDeleteMy (obsolete) training tells me that one should use 4x5 or 8x10 film or a megaexpensive high Mp professional digital camera for giant prints.
No one is committing to anything at this point Jon, just throwing ideas out.

ReplyDeleteI think that it will be as broad as possible thematically so that we can all do our own thing. That is why experimenting with scale might be interesting.

When one arrives at being "a gentleman of a certain age," the phrase "life is too short" starts to creep into the mind. As in, "life is too short for only one show per year." Monochrome was an exhilarating experience. Is there any reason not to have more than one show per year?
ReplyDeleteI don't think there is any reason to limit the shows except for the logistics. The two shows so far have been really nice in the sense that Robert has been able to "ringmaster" them and handle the many tasks that come along. If we want more shows it may be necessary to become more organized in order to share the labor involved. There are other things to deal with like finding sites. So we would have to decide if we like the casual non-structure we currently have or if we want to become an organization.
ReplyDeleteContinuing the brainstorming effort: The theme "Constructed Images" comes along. Construction could be anything beyond the tools of straight photography, including photoshop manipulations, darkroom techniques, odd presentations and multimedia like hand painting or even video. It might open the door to some conceptual experimentation.
ReplyDeleteOf course if this is too much and the group's preference is to experiment with scale we could call the show "Big Shots". I am open to anything.
I am also open to anything but think that we need a few months to let it all settle. We will come up with something great, scale was but one idea.
