Yourshot - National Geographic

My friend Stan, who sometimes comments on these pages and teaches photography at the New School in New York, suggested that I post some of my work on the National Geographic page Yourshot. So I did. Easy to join and you get instant reaction from around the world. I encourage you to join and post. Some very fine work and within minutes multiple people had hearted my stuff. Who doesn't need that?

You can join through here and they have assignments and workshops if you care to participate.

Humdinger

A friend has a hummingbird nesting in their patio and asked me to come over and grab a shot. The little nest is so beautiful.

PINK: See reply below. This was taken with a Canon 5D Mark III using a 50mm f1.4 lens.

Little boxes

First shot

This is my first shot with my new Sigma DP2 Merrill, a tight crop of a picture I took of my neighbors old trailer out in the field. Really like the color and detail, Sigma software is a bit of a bitch. And of course a jpeg can't begin to translate the tiff image adequately. Having said that, I think that this thing is going to be a lot of fun.

Here I added noise reduction, Stan and increased the black a smidge. I think what you might have perceived as noise is actually the natural granulation that takes place with a 70 year old tire. Entropy.

Comments

I have been pretty busy as of late and I have not made as many comments on Shutters' work as I have in the past.

I think everyone is doing really fine work: Blue Heron … you are prodigious and doing some very interesting work. I am afraid that if you start writing again, you will be posting fewer photos. That would be our loss on the one hand, while we gain on another! Jon: I love the chickens.and your general point of view. Louis: Always interesting. Ken: I love your ability to document events. Fred: you are not posting but I think your portrait work is amazing. Wild Bill: I want to see more!

It is my pleasure to be affiliated with this fine group of photographers!

Keep your eye on the birdie.

Most saturday mornings Fallbrook Shutters meets at the coffee shop and we swap shots and stories. I got up a little late today and drove down my narrow canyon road towards town. I did a visual on the hawks nest, actually think that she may have baby hawks in the nest, saw a couple tufts poking up and her first movements in several weeks. Not sure, must keep checking.

I continued down the dusty dirt road and espied an osprey sitting atop a telephone pole in the far distance. Since I had the 500mm on the Nikon I decided to snap a couple frames and then drive closer. Certainly not terrible but not as sharp as I had hoped. Alas by the time I got near, my bird and his fish breakfast had flown the coop. But you get the general idea. There will be another day.

And another

Postscript: Here is another version, I put something like this in a show, or on a calendar a few years ago. Can't find the original file but this approximation is close and it shows the bird a bit differently. Helps establish scale as well.

Here is a rather victorian old shot I took in Niagara Falls that I decided to play with this afternoon.

Where is Photography Going?

Here is an interesting LA Times article on virtual reality that has a lot of implications for where photography is headed.  If we think the switch from film to digital was disruptive, just wait until the photograph morphs into a sense colonizing alternate reality.
