This is my first shot with my new Sigma DP2 Merrill, a tight crop of a picture I took of my neighbors old trailer out in the field. Really like the color and detail, Sigma software is a bit of a bitch. And of course a jpeg can't begin to translate the tiff image adequately. Having said that, I think that this thing is going to be a lot of fun.

Here I added noise reduction, Stan and increased the black a smidge. I think what you might have perceived as noise is actually the natural granulation that takes place with a 70 year old tire. Entropy.

Just too tight. I converted to raw in the sigma program and brought it into photoshop. iso 100 Here was the original shot. I didn't use any noise or adjustments, it is out of the box, will get better with it with practice hopefully.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I think the jpeg processing lost that Sigma bite, though. Have you tried saving jpegs at 180 dpi (I know, it makes no sense, but it seems to preserve more detail), but at a smaller dimension, like 5"x8"?

I will try it. Originally saved at 360dpi. I noticed that the image pixelates fairly quickly in photoshop so I may be screwing up somewhere. Although this is the original. I may be back just too damn far. Thing can't see through walls...
ReplyDeleteJeez!
ReplyDeleteDidn't anyone ever tell you that cropping, except in rare instances, is to be avoided at all costs?
No wonder it looked that way!
I am cracking up...don't think I ever cropped anything so much, ever, cannot imagine, but find it funny.
Doesn't Adobe have the RAW converter for your camera? If not, you might be better off converting to their DNG format. You can download it for free from Adobe.
It is universal and noiseless. Then, you just download the RAW images out of the camera and pass it through the DNG processor. I have used it a few times and it worked fine.

In the first place, I have a new toy and wanted to see how far I could push it. Unfortunately, Lightroom would not accept the sigma proprietary file, or at least I couldn't make it accept it. I downloaded into the Sigma raw program, saved as a tiff and then imported it into lightroom.

ReplyDeleteAre you loading the "full res" version into Sigma Pro?
k
yes, highest of the three raw, or at least I think I am. Need your help.
ReplyDeleteI really like the comp. I do suggest cropping the bright area at the very right hand edge. Seems a little distracting.... Your eye is most attracted to the bright spots.
